IF WE HAD TIME, WE WOULD DO IT!

Most people wish they had more time—but for what? Many people would simply like to relax by spending time in an exotic place. And some of us wish we had extra time to help out in the community, such as cheering up the sick, or doing work to help save the environment. All of these necessary activities need time, and we often hear people say, “I'd do it, if I had the time.” The truth is that everybody thinks they are busy;students not only study all day and then do homework every evening, but they are also supposed to be involved in afterschool activities. Their fathers work long hours, and their mothers always try their best to look after the family, which makes the family feel cared for. I think it must be very difficult for some mothers who do this work in addition to having a job outside the home. But I believe that if we truly wanted to do something, we would be able to find the time. Don't you agree?

How Life Has Changed

A hundred years ago, life was very different. Many things that are used today had not been invented, such as the television. And people didn't use to rent DVDs;for entertainment they went to the movie theater, and families shared time. Letters used to be written and mailed;but in the present era, computers and cell phones have taken over in every area of our life,in education, in business and in home life. How people communicate and enjoy themselves has dramatically changed.

Ann:I'm worried about pollution, aren't you?

Dan:Not really. I think that the public has been well educated, and most people are trying to do better.

Ling:I disagree. I've seen many people doing things that make me feel so angry.

Ann:I have too. And they shouldn't be allowed to continue. I think we should begin to “save our planet” by starting at school.

Ling:Good idea,Ann. I think we could set up our own plan, don't you?

Dan:I guess you're both right. I'll join you.

themselves.

Li: Yes, I'd like to tell them that they are supposed to use chopsticks for eating.

Conversation 3

Teacher 1: Look at all this work to prepare for the examinations. There's too much to do and not

enough time.

Student:I know the first bicycle with rubber tyres was invented by an Irishman called Dunlop.

a type of“walking machine”. It was seen in Britain in 1817, and was invented by Baron von Drais.

Listening Part 4

Narrator: A survey on how students learn and what's important to them, is being done at Eastwood Junior High School. Listen to a fifteenyearold student, Lee Ming, being interviewed. Fill in the questionnaire with notes on information you hear.

Interviewer:Ming, I'd like to ask you about your English studies. How do you learn English?

Ming: Well, I know the grammar well, but that doesn't help me speak English well. And because I don't have much chance to practice speaking, I learn the skill by listening to native English speakers as often as possible; on TV, or the radio, and I know it's rude, but I even listen to conversations in cafes, or on the train! Staying with an English speaking family would be really helpful, if it were possible. I hope to do that one day.

Interviewer: It sounds as if you really like English. What's your dream?

Ming: My dream is to speak English fluently, so that I can get a job at the Olympic Games in China in 2008.

Interviewer: That might be volunteer work, right? So do you think volunteer work is important?

Ming: Yes, I do. My friends and I already do some community work in our own time. But I think we should be allowed to do more, as a school project.

Interviewer: Really? I'd ask your teacher about that, if I were you. And one last question — what do you think about protecting the environment?

Ming: That's a big question — too difficult to answer quickly. But my class is interested, and last week, we debated the issue of what zoos are for. We all agree that they should be places where endangered animals can be protected, so we must make sure zoos provide the right environment for the animals, not just put them in small cages.

Interviewver: Well, it's been nice talking to you. Thanks for agreeing to answer questions.

Ming: You're welcome. I enjoyed it too.
