Aboriginal is a term used to describe the people and animals that lived in a place from the earliest times or before European arrived. Examples are the Maori in New Zealand, the Aborigines in Australia and the Indians in America. They all share the fact that they were pushed off their lands by the European settlers.
Maori
The Maori were the first people to go to New Zealand, about 1,000 years ago. They came from the Island of Polynesia in the Pacific. They brought dogs, rats and plants with them and settled mainly on the Northern Island. In 1769, Captain James Cook from Britain took possession of the island and from that time British people started to settle. The Maori signed an agreement on land rights with these settlers, but in later years there were arguments and battles between them.
Aboriginals
The native people of Australia came from somewhere in Asia more than 50,000 years ago. They lived by hunting and gathering. Their contact with British settlers began in 1788. By the 1940s almost all of them were mixed into Australian society as low-paid workers. Their rights are limited. In 1976 and 1993 the Australian government passed laws that returned some lands to the Aboriginals and recognized their property rights.
American Indians
Long before the Europeans came to America in the 16th and 17th century, the American Indians, or Native Americans lived there. It is believed that they came from Asia. Christopher Columbus mistook the land for India and so called the people there Indians. The white settlers and American Indians lived in peace at the beginning, but conflicts finally arose and led to the Indian wars (1866-1890). After the wars, the Indians were driven to the west of the country. Not until 1924 did they gain the right to vote.

At the mouth of the Pearl River in Guangdong Province, 300 square kilometers of water have turned red recently.
The strange event is known as the "red tide" and has been around for more than a week. The red tide is caused by the rapid growth of a certain type of algae (藻类). Algae are tiny, single-celled (单细胞的) plants that live in the sea. They serve as the energy producers at the base of the food circle. When this particular type of algae reproduce in large numbers, they turn the ocean red.
Red tide algae produce poison and are dangerous to wildlife in the sea. They may even kill fish that feed on them by affecting their nervous system so they can’t breathe. Dead fish are often washed up on beaches as a direct result of this red tide. And the danger could extend to humans who eat the fish. What’s more, the algae also produce a terrible smell that makes it seem as if someone is holding your throat.
For local fishermen, the red tide is a tragedy. The poison kills large numbers of fish every time the algae bloom. Some of those fish are highly-prized. They are bred(繁殖)by the fishermen and cost them a small fortune.
No one really knows what caused red tides. Some experts believe it’s high temperature combined with a lick of wind and rain. But they appear all over the world. The East China Sea is frequently attacked by this killer algae. And it hangs around for a long time. In 1986, one red tide in the U.S. lasted for 16 months.
The only way to fight it is with large amount of rain and strong offshore(向海面吹的)winds that can break up the algae.
" We can only forecast the movement of existing red tides based on weather reports , wind and wave directions," said Li Liang, a Chinese scientist.
"Still, being on guard can avoid some losses. For instance, fishermen can avoid using water already infected that has not yet turned red." He added.
46. After reading the passage, we can conclude that ______
A. red tide has no effect on people’s health.
B. whoever eats the fish killed by red tides, he will die.
C. if people eat the fish killed by red tides, they will feel terrible.
D. people will find it hard to breathe when they smell the bad smell produced by the algae.

A. stays B. erupts C. eradicates D. escapes
48. The last two paragraphs mainly tell us_______.
A. scientists are struggling with red tides
B. scientists give some advice on how to avoid losses, even if they can do little about red tides
C. China owns the most advanced technology to forecast the movement of red tides so that they can carry
out further study
D. scientists are helping the local fishers to reduce their losses when a red tide happens.
49. The main idea of the passage is ______.
A. The red tide has polluted most of seawater in Guangdong
B. that humans are making efforts to control red tide
C. why a red sea takes place
D. that fishes are killed as a result of the red tide

When Reginald Lindsay received a scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, what he wanted most, was a good job with a good salary. But soon he became interested in the civil rights movement. At present he has a plan which he hopes will take him to Congress as a southern representative.
Now in his first year at Harvard Law School, Reg is making careful plans. After earning his degree, he expects to return to the South to practice law among the poor. " I want to help them understand what their rights are and to help them achieve them," he says. Then he hopes to run for political office at the local and state level until he is ready to try for Congress.
Reg grew up in a low-income Negro section of Birmingham, Alabama. Brought up by his grandparents after his parents were divorced while he was very young, Reg has been living through a period of far-reaching progress in race relations. In the summer of 1968, Reg himself became a good example of this progress when he became the first Negro student appointed to a special new program. The program introduces bright young students to the working of the Georgia State government and encourages them to seek employment there after finishing their education. While studying for his bachelor’s degree at Morehouse College, Reg worked on several political campaigns helping candidates(候选人)get elected to government offices. At the same time he maintained a "B" average while majoring in political science. He worked as a student advisor to earn extra money for his college expenses, and he was granted a scholarship for a year of study at the University of Valencia in Spain.
With just two more years to complete at Harvard Law School, which also gave him a scholarship, Reg has made a good start on his professional career. He says, "The good life for me is the kind of life where I can find satisfaction in public service."
